During Advent and Lent, our churches have skipped collecting a noisy offering, and have water jugs near the sanctuary entrances to collect a special seasonal offering. For this Advent and Christmas, our Noisy Offering will go to the Malawi Famine Fund.
Our brothers and sisters in our companion synod in Malawi are suffering. The Synod office sent the following information.
As of this October, 2.8 million people starving in Malawi according to the UN Food Bank. It is anticipated that the food sources growing around the villages will be depleted as the famine progresses. In the urban capital of Lilongwe, many will be left with one meal a day, which is far more than what many throughout Malawi will have. Maize or corn is being rationed at exorbitant costs. Many of these centers are a far walk, and the maize is unaffordable. This is a dire situation. Malnutrition and starvation cause physical and developmental damage. Please help the saints of our accompanying church. All funds that are raised in this appeal will be sent to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Malawi, and they will administer these gifts for hunger relief.
Given the success of our Walk4Water challenge, I have no doubt your generosity will allow our churches to send more than $1,000 to Malawi. While I hope we can raise this without me needing to embarrass myself, I am prepared to put on the appropriate green & gold or cheese related items if such motivation is needed.
Edited: Since this appeared in the Messenger, Pastor Brian has been challenged, should the goal of $1,000 be reached, to wear a cheese head during announcements during the seasons of Christmas and Epiphany. Below is a potential picture.
