Martin Luther: The Idea That Changed The World
Don’t miss this special event: the new Martin Luther film.
Tuesday, September 12 at 7:00 pm on PBS
PBS premieres Martin Luther: The Idea that Changed the World nationwide on Tuesday, September 12th at 7:00 pm Central. The two-hour film brings to life Luther's 16th century quest to reform the church—a journey that would profoundly reshape western civilization.
This entertaining new film follows the great adventure story of Luther’s life, packed with political intrigue, kidnappings, and life-or-death showdowns. Follow the dramatic story of Martin Luther's life: the massive lightning storm that nearly killed him, the bleak self-punishment of his time in the monastery, the corruption that unleashed his anger, his trial before the most powerful man in Europe, and the staged kidnapping that helped him escape the death penalty. At the same time, it's a story about the most important questions of life, including "Who am I?" "What is my purpose" and "How do I get right with God?"
It’s a must-see for any lifelong Lutheran, and a chance to share the message of your Lutheran heritage with others. And the only place you can see the film is in the theater on the night of our church’s special event.
This is the first time in more than 60 years that Lutherans have made a feature-length film about Martin Luther and the Reformation. Filmed in historic locations across Europe, this movie brings Luther’s story to life with exquisite attention to detail. It’s a chance to strengthen your faith by revisiting the birth of Protestant Reformation, and to share that experience with others.
Listings show it will be shown again on Wednesday, September 13th at 1:30 am, and Sunday, September 24th at 1 pm.
In our August newsletter, we announced a screening of this movie to be on October 18th, not knowing it would be shown on TV a month earlier. We are cancelling the showing.
Another video, Rick Steves’ Luther and the Reformation has also been produced, and appeared earlier this year on PBS. Pastor Brian will have showings of this video on Monday evenings in October at all three churches. Times and locations will be determined.
We are recommending two ways to help those in Texas who are dealing with the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey.
The ELCA's Lutheran Disaster Response was on the scene while the storm was still raging, and will be there as long as it is needed. You can contribute to their efforts on this page.
The ELCA Gulf Coast Synod is able to fund activities and respond to needs quickly with the resources it has. You can make a contribution on this page.
