Regretfully, we did not meet my challenge during Advent, and I avoided the honor of wearing a cheese-head during announcements.
But I want to push my luck for Lent. As I scratched my head for an idea, I thought what could I do to connect with people to get them to be motivated to give. Some say I may be giving up wisdom for Lent, but it is for a good cause.
Heifer International helps farmers in developing areas to be able to sustain their farms by giving animals that can be used in their farming. One of the offerings they have is called The Cheeses of the World Gift Basket. A family farm can be gifted with a goat, a sheep, a cow and a water buffalo. Each animal can provide milk for dairy products such as milk, butter and cheese.
I thought, what a wonderful gift to be given by the people of a dairy farming area. The Cheeses of the World Gift Basket costs $990.
So here is my challenge:
If the three congregations can contribute enough in a special noisy offering buy TWO Cheeses of the World Gift Baskets ($1,980), I will have my hair dyed to look like an Easter egg during the Easter season (March 27-May 14) AND red for Pentecost Sunday (May 15), which happens to be when Bishop Hoyme is preaching.
Emmanuel and Our Savior’s donated almost $1,400 last year for Walk4Water. Can the three congregations step up to be gouda enough this year? I hope you don’t swiss out on this challenge!
