Halloween originally started as a church holiday. Really.
Check out this article from Vibrant Faith on the three days when we remember our loved ones who have died, and the traditions that used to go along with them. Maybe you might include one of the traditions to remember those who are no longer with us.
BTW, in the Lutheran tradition, we celebrate October 31 as Reformation Day because in was on that day in 1517 that Martin Luther nailed his 95 Thesis to the church door. He chose that day because the next day, All Saint's Day, was one of the highest attended church services of the year.
